What is Isomap and how does it preserve structure?

Isomap preserves global geometry using geodesic distances.

Isomap builds a nearest-neighbor graph and computes shortest path distances between points to approximate geodesic distances on a manifold. It then applies MDS to embed data in lower dimensions.
