What is the difference between logical and physical reads?

Updated May 17, 2026

Short answer

Logical reads come from memory; physical reads come from disk.

Deep explanation

SQL Server first checks buffer cache (logical reads). If data is not present, it performs physical IO from disk, which is significantly slower.
