Resumen de visado

Non-EU tech workers most commonly enter via a Spain-sponsored ’Highly Qualified Professional’ work permit (a fast-track authorization for skilled roles, typically approved in a few weeks), or the EU Blue Card. Remote workers employed by non-Spanish companies can instead use Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, introduced in 2023, offering a route to residency without a local employer.

Vías de visado

EU Blue Card

Alta certeza

Patrocinado por el empleador · 1-3 months

Requires a job offer above a set national salary threshold and a recognized degree or 3+ years of relevant experience; grants an initial 1-4 year residence/work permit with strong EU mobility rights.

Importante

This is a general estimate for planning purposes only — not tax or immigration advice. Verify current rules with an official government source or a licensed professional before making a relocation decision.

Highly Qualified Professional Visa

Alta certeza

Patrocinado por el empleador · 2-4 weeks (fast-track)

A fast-track, employer-sponsored work authorization for skilled roles including most tech positions, processed by Spain’s Unit for Large Companies and Strategic Sectors with expedited decisions.

Digital Nomad Visa

Certeza media

Autopetición · 1-2 months

For remote employees or freelancers working for non-Spanish companies; applicant self-petitions with proof of remote employment/income, and can also elect the Beckham Law flat tax rate.

Resumen fiscal

These are general state IRPF brackets (regional surcharges vary by autonomous community). Qualifying incoming foreign workers can elect Spain’s ’Beckham Law’ special expat regime, taxing Spanish-source employment income at a flat 24% (up to EUR600,000, 47% above) instead of ordinary progressive rates, for up to 6 years.

Apoyo a la reubicación

Larger tech employers and multinationals often provide relocation packages covering flights, temporary housing, and immigration/legal fees, though this is less standardized than in the US. Housing and living costs are significantly lower outside Madrid and Barcelona (e.g., Valencia, Malaga, Seville). English is widely used in international tech teams, but conversational Spanish greatly eases daily life and bureaucracy.

Cultura

Spanish tech workplaces generally value strong work-life balance, with legally mandated vacation (minimum 22 working days), though Madrid/Barcelona tech offices increasingly follow more standard 9-to-6 international schedules. Madrid and Barcelona have become major Southern European tech hubs attracting international talent, while Valencia is growing quickly as a lower-cost hub.
