Visa overview

Foreign tech hires typically come via the Skilled Worker visa, sponsored by a Home Office-licensed employer against a specific job and salary meeting the going rate for the role, with faster processing and lower fees for shortage-occupation roles. The Global Talent visa offers an employer-independent alternative for those endorsed as leaders or emerging leaders in digital technology by an approved endorsing body (e.g. Tech Nation's successor bodies).

Visa pathways

Skilled Worker Visa

High certainty

Employer-sponsored · 3-8 weeks

The main route: requires a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor at a salary meeting the going rate for the role, with reduced fees/salary requirements for shortage occupations.

Important

This is a general estimate for planning purposes only — not tax or immigration advice. Verify current rules with an official government source or a licensed professional before making a relocation decision.

Last verified: 7/23/2026

Global Talent Visa

Medium certainty

Self-petition · 3-8 weeks (plus endorsement time)

An employer-independent route for those endorsed by an approved body as a leader or emerging leader in digital technology; more subjective and selective than the Skilled Worker route.

Tax overview

England/Wales/Northern Ireland rates shown (2024/25); Scotland sets its own slightly different bands and rates. The personal allowance (the 0% band) tapers away entirely for income above GBP125,140, creating an unusually high effective marginal rate (60%) in the GBP100,000-125,140 band that catches many mid/senior tech earners by surprise.

Relocation support

London remains the dominant tech hub, with Manchester, Bristol, and Edinburgh growing fast; sponsoring employers must be licensed by the Home Office, so it is worth confirming sponsor status early in the process. Housing in London is expensive and competitive, typically requiring a UK guarantor or several months' rent upfront for newcomers without a UK credit history; English is, unsurprisingly, the default working language everywhere.

Culture

UK tech workplace culture blends American-style directness in fast-growing startups with more traditionally reserved, understated communication at larger or more established employers; self-deprecating humour and indirect feedback ("that's an interesting idea" can mean disagreement) are common enough to catch newcomers off guard. Standard hours are around 37.5-40/week, statutory paid leave is at least 28 days (including public holidays), and hybrid work has become the norm at most tech employers since 2021-2022.
